Timeless Beads from Wonderbarrel

When I am working with beads, sometimes it hits me that humans have been making, sorting, counting, and stringing them for tens of thousands of years. Perhaps this is why it feels so natural to handle them. Archaelologists disagree about just how far back bead use goes–probably at least 30,000 years, to around the time cave painting began. They agree on the meaning of bead use–as objects that didn’t serve as food, shelter, weaponry, or any other practical purpose, they must symbolize something to people who used and made them. And symbols means that people are on the way to talking and practicing religion and all the other actions we think of as truly human.
What do beads mean to you?
